Medicine Wastage in the NHS

It is well publicised in the media that the NHS has an ever increasing budget deficit, as a result all areas of the health care are under pressure. In order to address this, all areas of health care are exploring ways in which budget deficits can be reduced whilst continuing to provide quality health care to all the population. In Knowsley, medicine wastage in particular has undergone review, following a recent presentation to our PPG by the Medicines Management Team regarding medicines wastage in Knowsley. Our PPG is keen to make this a priority area for improvement at the practice.

Q1. What is the annual medicine wastage in Knowsley ?

Q2. When ordering your repeat medication , either for yourself or a relative you care for do you order just what you need or everything on the list each time you order ?

Q3. When collecting your repeat medication from the pharmacy, do you check it before leaving the pharmacy or when you get home ?

GP Appointments

At the practices doctors are noticing an increase in the number of problems patients are wishing to discuss during their appointment. All GP appointments are scheduled for 10 minutes, during a 10 minute appointment the doctor is only able to safely deal with 2 problems in this time. Therefore a decision has been made in the interests of patient safety and delivery of a quality service to all patients. Should a patient wish to discuss more than 2 problems in a 10 minute appointment consultation, they will now be requested to book a further appointment. This will also assist in reducing waiting times for patients attending booked appointments at the surgery.

Q6. As a patient do you agree with the decision regarding appointments in the interests of patient safety and delivery of quality care?

Q7. Are you aware the practice offers on request the ability to book double appointments with the GP should you have multiple problems to discuss?

Information Governance
